I am pleased to announce that, this week, I expressed to Monica Wolfe the Board’s unanimous desire that she become the congregation’s permanent Executive Director, and that Monica agreed to accept that role. We feel fortunate to have found someone with her talent, commitment, energy, and positive attitude to take on this important position. We are grateful for everything that Monica has already contributed during her tenure as Interim Executive Director, and look forward to working with her (and, through her, all of the other staff) to advance Ohev’s mission going forward. Please join me in welcoming Monica to her new role!

Comments on the Portion, Haftorah & Morning Prayers, Contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz

THE PARSHA 
This Shabbos we read the second parsha in the Torah: Noach, the story of Noach, the flood, and the events that took place after Noach left the ark. It also includes the story of the Tower of Babel, but here, we will concentrate on the part of the parsha connected with Noach. 

The parsha begins with the statement that Noach was a pious person (a tzadik) "in his generation." Why this qualification? The rabbis interpret the phrase in two ways. One, Noach was pious in his generation, where everyone was a sinner, but in another generation, where everyone was pious, Noach would not stand out for his piety. The other, opposite explanation is that in a generation of sinners, even a small measure of Noach's piety was worthy of mention, but in a generation that was entirely pious, it was necessary to emphasize Noach's great piety. 

After the flood took place, Noach and his three sons, Shem, Ham and Yafes, left the ark. Noach became drunk and disrobed, and his son, Ham, saw him in his nakedness. When he recovered, Noach cursed Canaan, the fourth son of Ham, saying that he would be a slave to his brothers. The incident has been the subject of much discussion; there is even a book by D. Goldenberg, entitled, "The Curse of Ham." The question is: If Ham sinned, why did Noach curse Canaan? The traditional answer is that Ham castrated Noach, and because Ham had made it impossible for Noach to have a fourth son, Noach cursed Canaan, who was Ham's fourth son, as described in the Bible. But why didn't Noach curse Ham directly? To this, the traditional answer is that since Gd had previously blessed Noach and his three sons (9:1), including Ham, it was not proper for Noach to curse a person whom Gd had blessed.

A number of questions remain, and the most troubling issue is the unhappy use to which the story has been put. One of Ham's descendants was Kush, usually associated with Ethiopia, and some have argued that Noach's curse of slavery was justification for the enslavement of African-Americans in the United States. Goldenberg shows the many flaws of this argument, but sadly, it had a life of its own in American North-South politics.

THE HAFTORAH
The Haftorah is from Isaiah 54. Gd first refers back to his promise not to bring another flood on mankind. He then says, "For the mountains may move, and the hills be shaken, but my loyalty shall never leave you, nor my covenant of friendship be shaken, says the Lord, who takes you back in Love."
