We are thrilled to announce that the shul has hired Stacey Watson, who starts next week to lead the efforts in programming for Ohev’s diverse adult population. Many thanks to the hiring committee, Rena Fruchter, Stephanie Hoffman, Shaanan Meyerstein, and Starr Stixrud, for their great efforts and the Board for its approval. Stacey comes to us from the Charles E. Smith Jewish Life Communities where she led an award-winning program department at the Ring House. Stacey holds an MSW in management and community organizing, and has worked with a variety of adult and youth populations in the metro area Jewish community. Stacey will spend the next several weeks meeting with Ohev members and getting a better sense of priorities. She will help empower our volunteers to organize activities while addressing multiple cohorts and integrating various subgroups within the community. Welcome aboard, Stacey! 

The Parsha, Ki Teitzei, continues with a statement of the many laws presented by Moses to the Jewish people during their journey to the Promised Land. One of the more noteworthy is probably the world’s first occupational safety law. The Parsha instructs that when an individual is building a house, he or she must make a "parapet" (small fence) on the edge of the roof so that no one will fall from the roof. (I was an occupational safety and health attorney in the U.S. Labor Department. My book on OSHA quotes the Biblical law on the first page.)

The Parsha also contains the challenging law of "shilu'ach ha'kan." If a person comes upon a nest with a mother bird sitting on her fledglings or eggs, you must first send the mother away before taking the fledgling or eggs, so as not to cause pain to the mother. The Talmud relates an incident where a father instructs his son to climb a tree and take the eggs, and the son fulfills his father's request, and in doing so, first sends the mother away. Then, in coming down from the tree, the son falls and dies. Since the Torah articulates the reward of a long life for honoring a parent, and a long and a good life for sending the mother bird away, the Talmud asks: "Where is the long and good life for the son?" The Talmud answers that the reward is a "good life in the world that is all good and long life in the world that is entirely long." (Kiddushin 39b)

In the morning prayers, the Talmud is quoted as saying that one who honors his or her parents receives the "fruits" of his action in this world, while the "principal" remains in the world to come. (Shabbos 127a)

Taste of Ohev Kosher Supper Club: Home-Smoked Labor Day BBQ
Monday, September 3 4:00pm at the Heiligman home (Columbia, MD)
Celebrate the final days of summer at a Labor Day barbecue hosted by Yocheved and Gary Heiligman! Enjoy the specialties of the house, such as home-smoked salmon, turkey and kebabs, Sephardi style red and white coleslaw, fire roasted vegetables, and other favorites such as Gary's pareve pumpkin pie, and more. (Menu could vary with the weather, but we will have a great time, rain or shine!) Space for 12 guests. Minimum of 6 guests needed for barbecue to happen. Rain or shine, have fun this Labor Day! (Dining will move inside if weather isn't cooperative).
