For the time being, a coat rack has been temporarily placed in the hallway, but please bear this in mind when planning what to bring with you to shul on Shabbat morning. This work is also affecting the Chadar Tikvah. Due to safety precautions, the Chadar Tikvah will be closed on Shabbat morning. Kids groups and kiddush will all meet downstairs. Seudah shlishit will meet in the Chadar Tikvah as usual. Thank you for your patience with this project. We are working hard to make the process as efficient as possible so that we can have full access to the space again. Shabbat Lunch Hospitality This Week If anyone is in need of a meal this Shabbat due to kitchen construction, Chani & Steve Laufer have generously offered to host. We will connect guests with hosts at the end of the announcements.
The Capital Kosher Pantry Parshas Re’eh teaches about the importance of giving tzedakah — that it is really just expected of us!! What a wonderful way to start Elul. The shelves at Yad Yehuda’s Capital Kosher Pantry are in serious need of replenishment. Are you able to donate some of the items on their wishlists? Donations can be dropped off in the box in the hallway.
Portion of the Week, contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
Moses' instruction of the Jews in their desert journey to the Promised Land continues in Parshat Re'eh. Individuals are confronted with the fundamental choice in life, a "Blessing" (bracha) if G-d's commandments are followed, and a "klala" if they are rejected (12:26-28). The Parsha continues with an early articulation of the requirements of "Due Process." If two witnesses testify in a death-penalty case, the Court before imposing judgment must "investigate, and inquire, and interrogate thoroughly" to determine if the testimony is "true" and "consistent" (13:15). Finally, the Parsha describes the observance of the three "historical" Festivals, Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos. These verses constitute the Synagogue Torah reading for those Festivals. In celebrating the Festival in Jerusalem, the Torah emphasizes that a person may not come "empty-handed," but with his or her own gift "according to the Blessing bestowed by G-d" (16:17).
