Construction Update Due to ongoing construction related to the kitchen project, the coat room will be closed until further notice. For the time being, a coat rack has been temporarily placed in the hallway, but please bear this in mind when planning what to bring with you to shul on Shabbat morning. This work is also affecting the Chadar Tikvah. Due to safety precautions, the Chadar Tikvah will be closed on Shabbat morning. Kids groups and kiddush will all meet downstairs. Seudah shlishit will meet in the Chadar Tikvah as usual. Thank you for your patience with this project. We are working hard to make the process as efficient as possible so that we can have full access to the space again. Shabbat Lunch Hospitality This Week If anyone is in need of a meal this Shabbat due to kitchen construction, Andrea & Ariel Wolf have generously offered to host. We will connect guests with hosts at the end of the announcements.
The Capital Kosher Pantry needs donations of unused school supplies (backpacks and other supplies), as well as kosher food pantry items. To donate, please see the regularly updated wish lists at yadyehuda.org/pantry-wishlist.html.
Get More Involved! Like many communities, we rely on volunteers to help make Ohev such a vibrant shul. We are fortunate to have volunteers to assist in many key areas -- but more are always needed. Please consider getting involved by joining (or taking a leadership role) in one of our synagogue committees. Whether you have several hours a week or even a few hours a month, there is an opportunity for you to volunteer and help make a difference in our community. Visit ostns.org/committees to see a full list of committees and contact information (must be logged into ostns.org account to view).
Portion of the Week, contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
This week's parshah is Eikev, the third in the Book of Dvorim, the last Book in the Torah. The story of the Jews' travels in the desert towards the Promised Land continues, with Moses once again emphasizing the obligation of the Jewish people to be loyal to God. "You must revere the Lord your God; only Him shall you worship, to Him you shall hold fast, and by His name shall you swear" (10:20). Listen in the parshah for the second paragraph of the Shema prayer. The Jews are warned of the punishment if they are "seduced" by their hearts to serve other gods and informed of the tangible rewards for listening to God's commandments. The parshah also contains the basis for the Grace After Meals (Birkat Hamazon): "When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you." Finally, of particular relevance today, is the admonition: "You should love the stranger for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt."
This Week's Haftarah Video
Our beloved member, Hal Brodsky, Z"L, created short videos explaining an aspect of each week's haftarah. Each week, the Shabbooom plans to share Hal's d'var haftarah with the community. This week's Haftorah, the second in the series of seven Haftorahs of consolation following Tisha B'Av, is from the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah says, "Truly, the Lord has comforted Zion...Gladness and Joy shall abide there, thanksgiving and the sound of music." (Isaiah 51:3) Click here before Shabbat to view Hal's short video about the Haftorah.
