We are pleased to welcome Rabbi Ethan Tucker as our guest scholar this Shabbat. Rabbi Tucker is President and Rosh Yeshiva at Mechon Hadar and chair in Jewish Law. He also directs Mechon Hadar’s Center for Jewish Law and Values. There will be three opportunities to hear him speak: Shabbat morning, following Kiddush Luncheon, and during Seudah Shlishit. Rabbi Tucker's visit is sponsored in loving memory of Isidore and Nathalie Friedman by their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

This week's Kiddush Luncheon is sponsored by Zev Lewis in appreciation of the Ohev Mincha/Maariv Minyan who enabled him to say Kaddish for his father, Phillip S. Lewis.

Ohev Sholom - The National Synagogue is seeking a full-time Director of Adult Programs. This position is responsible for the development, coordination, execution and evaluation of Ohev Sholom’s adult-centered programs. The ideal candidate is team-focused with an acute understanding that the goal of programming is not the programs themselves, but the people they engage. This position requires flexibility of schedule and will include some evenings, shabbatot and weekends. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is supported by the clergy, staff, and volunteer lay leadership. Please visit our listing on JewishJobs.com for more details.

The Tzedek Committee is raising money to send the Kharooty children to summer camp. Please consider donating to help the family continue to adjust to their new lives in the US. Kavod V Nichum will hold the 16th Annual North American Chevrah Kadisha and Jewish Cemetery Conference June 3-5 at Beth El. It is the preeminent Jewish funeral practices conference. You can get info on the conference here​​​​​. There are several Shabbat observant attendees. Ohev Sholom has been asked to provide hospitality. Programmatic Budget Discussion RESCHEDULED - Wednesday, May 9, 8pm
Please join the board for a discussion of the programmatic budget for 2018-2019. This is an opportunity to thoroughly review the budget and provide input. We have not done this before and view it akin to a DC council appropriations session, where the board will be open to suggestions on what to increase, cut, add, or eliminate in the annual programmatic budget. It will then be incumbent on the board to make any tough spending decisions. We hope you can make it.

Annual Meeting 
All members are invited and encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 23, following 8:05pm Mincha/Maariv services. We will be voting on open Board of Directors positions, presenting the FY19 Budget, and hearing program reports from our staff.
 
The Ohev Board of Directors has two openings this year. The Nominations Committee recommended a slate to the current Board of Directors, which gave its approval. 
 
Nominations for Directors’ Positions:
Zan Frackelton (term ending 2021)
Pesha Rubinstein (term ending in 2021)

Anyone who wishes to nominate any other individual can do so by submitting a name in writing to the Nominations Committee by May 12, 2018. The nomination must be accompanied by the supporting signatures of at least seven members in good standing of the congregation. Please send any additional nominations to the attention of the Nominations Committee, c/o Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue, 1600 Jonquil Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20012.

Only those candidates on the slate submitted by the board or individuals approved by the Nominations Committee by May 12th are eligible for election. No nominations from the floor will be accepted at the May 23rd meeting. All members in good standing (Bylaws Article II, Section 4) attending the May 23rd meeting may exercise a vote; no votes may be cast in absentia.

Guest Scholar Gil Troy
Please join us as we welcome Gil Troy as our guest scholar in honor of Yom Yerushalayim. He will speak Shabbat morning and during Seudah Shlishit. Gil Troy is the author of The Zionist Ideas, which was just published by The Jewish Publication Society. Natan Sharansky has called this, Troy’s 12th book, “a magnificent work,” Troy’s “magnum opus,” and “the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg’s classic The Zionist Idea." An American presidential historian who has been featured on CNN’s popular 1980s and 1990s decade shows, he is a Distinguished Scholar of North American History at McGill University. Support DC Kosher & Celebrate Maharat Ruth & Yoni Friedman - Shabbat June 9
Supporters of DC Kosher will be sponsoring a special kiddush luncheon on Gala Shabbat (June 9) featuring a taste of new Kosher DC. The Gala Shabbat will be "celebrating five years of Ruth and Yoni," so what better way to celebrate our Vegetarian Pioneer Female Clergy than with a delicious vegan food tasting from these places? We invite you to join us! We can showcase the delicious vegan mac and cheese, the "chicken" drumsticks, the paneer, the mango lassi. Who's hungry? Our goal is to drum up business for these newly kosher establishments and celebrate this exciting news for our community. Take a look at the menus at ostns.org/kosher, and help us decide what to order! But, most importantly, please contribute through Ohev's website at ostns.org/donate.
