Comments on the Week's Two Parshiyot, by Rabbi Ben Mintz, z"l
In August of 2018, Rabbi Ben Mintz, z”l, began contributing comments to the Shabboom, about the weekly parsha and haftorah. As most of you know, he would also include a few words about any relevant megillah, holiday reading, and -- from Pesach to the end of the summer -- chapter of Pirkei Avot. At one point, for a few months, he decided to add brief thoughts each week about one of the daily prayers. His run of nearly three years in the Shabboom ends with this week’s contribution, which was written and edited not long before Rabbi Mintz passed away this past Thursday, after a long and fruitful life.
Another valuable addition to the Shabboom began at the same time as Ben Mintz’s column: the offer of a link to an insightful, often witty video about each week's haftorah. All those videos were created a little while back, by Hal Brodsky, z”l, for the Ohev congregation. Naomi Brodsky has decided that, at least for now, the offer of those video links will also end after nearly a three-year run.
And so, herewith, Rabbi Mintz’s final column -- briefer than most of his -- and a link to a haftorah video. Both are for a double parsha whose title seems to bear special meaning this year: Acharei Mot--Kedoshim.

-------------------------------------
Two parshiyos this week: Acharei Mos and Kedoshim. They include a multitude of laws, including many that still have application.
Vayikra 19:3 -- A man shall fear his mother and father and shall observe the Shabbos. From this inclusion of a Shabbos mitzvah with the mitzvah of fearing ones parents, we learn that if a parent instructs you to violate the Shabbos, even though you ordinarily should obey the parent, you may not do so if that requires a violation of the Shabbos. Shabbos takes precedence
Lifnei yveir lo sitein michshol. You should not place a stumbling block before a blind person. Vayikra 19:14. This rule has been interpreted broadly to mean that one should not give bad advice or misleading advice to an individual who is "blind", that is, a person who is ignorant in the matter involved.
The haftorah is from the prophet Amos. "And I shall plant them, the Jews, on their land, and they will not be uprooted from the land that I have given them, thus says the Lord."
Haftorah Video, by Hal Brodsky z"l
