Words on the Weekly Parsha and Haftorah, contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
Parshas Shemini continues the presentation of rules governing the kohanim, and concludes with a comprehensive statement of the laws of kashrus covering mammals, birds, fish, and creatures that "swarm" the earth. The parsha completes the description of the consecration of the kohanim for their holy work.
There follows the incident of Aharon's two sons, Nadav and Avihu, who offer an alien fire, "eish zara" in the sanctuary. "A fire came forth from before Hashem and consumed them, and they died before Hashem."
God says, "I will be sanctified through those who are nearest Me." (Vayikra 10:3) The rabbis explain that when Aharon's sons were consumed by fire, Moshe told Aharon that his sons had died for the specific purpose of sanctifying God's name. When Aharon heard that his sons had fulfilled God's purpose, he said nothing. The rabbis say that Aharon received a divine reward because of his silence.
The haftorah is from the second book of Shmuel (2 Samuel 6:1-7:17). It tells of King David acting joyfully and in a not altogether kingly fashion before the Ark containing the Tablets. David is criticized by Michal, the daughter of deposed King Saul, whom David has replaced. She says that David is not comporting himself as befits a king. David responds that God chose him to replace her father, and that he will dishonor himself even more and be low in his own esteem, but that "among the slave girls,,,I will be honored" The book of Shmuel then says that Michal did not give birth to a child "until the day of her death."
