Comments on this Week's Readings: Song of the Sea, The Song of King David, and Song of Songs. Contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
This Shabbos, which is the seventh day of Pesach, we read Shiras Hayam, the Song of the Sea (also known as Az Yashir). It comes from parshas Beshalach in the book of Shmos. Shiras Hayam is a celebratory song by the children of Israel about the splitting of the sea, which allowed them safe passage to the other side. The immediate return of the waters to their usual depths brought about the destruction of their pursuers. The Rabbis tell us that this event occurred on the 21st of Nisan, the date of this Shabbos.
The haftorah for the seventh day of Pesach is the Song of David which he sang when God saved him from his enemies and Saul (2 Samuel 22:1-51). It parallels the Song of the Sea.
Shir Hashirim, one of the megillos, is also read, from a scroll, on Pesach. This generally occurs on the Shabbos of Chol Ha'moed. However, this year, Pesach began the day after Shabbos. That meant there would be no Shabbos during Chol Ha'moed. Therefore, we read it when Shabbos does arrive on the seventh day of Pesach, which is this Shabbos. Rabbi Akiva said that the entire Torah is "kodesh," holy, and Shir Hashirim is "kodesh kedoshim," holy of holies.
