Comments on this Week's Parsha, Haftorah, and Special Additional Readings, Submitted by Rabbi Ben Mintz
Two parshiyos are read this Shabbos: V'yakhel and Pekudei. They close the book of Shmos. Chazak, chazak, v'nischazek. Let us be strong together. This Shabbos is Shabbos Hachodesh, the last of the special Shabbosos preceding Pesach, which begins on the 15th of Nisan -- this year, that is the evening of March 27th. For Shabbos Hachodesh, we also read Shmos 12:1-20, which relates God's instructions to Moshe about the month of Nisan.
Next Shabbos, we begin the book of Vayikra, known as the book of the priests, because it includes instructions for the sacrifices.
The parshiyos V'yakhel and Pekudei include instructions for the construction and furnishing of the Ohel Moed -- the Tent of Meeting -- and the Mishkan -- the Tabernacle -- both of which provided a place of worship while the Jewish people were traveling in the desert. The artistic work was in the hands primarily of Bezalel ben Uri ben Hur of the tribe of Yehudah, who was blessed by God with great artistic skill and ability.
Women in Israel sought to contribute their mirrors to the furnishing of the Ohel and Mishkan. The Rabbis relate that Moshe angrily rejected those mirrors on the grounds that they represented the egoism of those who looked at themselves in them. God interceded, saying the mirrors were treasured above all the other gifts for the following reason: When the Jews were slaves in Egypt, the men were too exhausted for sexual activity after their days' labors. But the women beautified themselves with the help of their mirrors, making themselves more attractive, more irresistible and leading to the continuation of the Jewish people. When Moshe understood that reasoning, he treasured the mirrors.
The haftorah is the special haftorah for Shabbos Hachodesh, Yechezkeil (Ezekiel) 45:16-46:18. Even though the following day is Rosh Chodesh, the haftorah for Machar Chodesh is not read. Shabbos Hachodesh takes precedence.
