Covid & Mental Health Survey
Last year we participated in a faith & mental health survey for researchers at Catholic University. They have built a follow-up survey focusing specifically on mental health during the pandemic, and we invite all members to participate (it should take 15 minutes.) In addition to helping support their research, Ohev's participation will also give the shul leadership useful information on the challenges and experiences of our members during the pandemic, which will allow us to serve you better. For the results to be accurate and useful, we need as high a response rate as possible. So we ask all adults to please fill out the survey. The survey is completely anonymous; we do not collect names or email addresses. You can find the surveyhere. Thank you for your participation!

Comments on the Weekly Portion and Haftorah Contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
This week's parsha, Chayei Sarah, begins with the death of Avraham's wife. The rabbis note that word of Sarah's death comes at the very beginning of this parsha, shortly after the story of the Akeda in the preceding parsha, Vayera. They explain that Sarah received news that her son Yitzchak was being prepared for sacrifice and then, word that he'd been saved at the last minute. The shock of going from great grief to great joy was too much for Sarah's heart, and that caused her death.
The Torah states (Bereshis 23:1) that Sarah lived "a hundred years and twenty years and seven years." Why are the years stated separately?" The rabbi explain that Sarah's years were all alike in their good quality. Thus, at a hundred years old, she was like a twenty year-old woman who had not sinned, and when she was twenty years old, she was like a seven year old in beauty, (We can understand that young girls in rabbinical times were the epitome of beauty.) . The parsha continues with Avraham sending his servant Eliezer to Charan to choose a wife for Yitzchak. (You will recall that Terach and his family had stopped in Charan and lived there on their way to the Promised Land. Eliezer chooses Rivka as Yitzchak's wife. She is the daughter of Besual, the son of Avraham's brother, Nachor. We will get to know the family in Charan a lot better, when Yaakov flees there to escape Eisav's anger. We are told that when Yitzchak brought Rivka home, he brought her into the tent that had been his mother's. (24:67). Rashi explains that as long as a man's mother lives, he is bound to her. When his mother dies, he is then bound to his wife. So it was with Yitzchak.
The parsha ends with the death of Avraham (25:8) and with a recitation of the generations of Ishmael, the son of Avraham by Hagar. (25:12ff)
The Haftorah tells us of the old age of King David and the competition to succeed him. It recounts the efforts of his wife Batsheva to assure that Solomon would be awarded the crown after the death of David. (1 Kings:1-31) The haftorah ends with Batsheva saying. "May my lord King David live forever." (Verse 31)
