Comments on the Portion, Haftorah & Morning Prayers, As Well As a Few Words About the Daily Prayers Contributed by Rabbi Ben Mintz
This week's parsha, Tetzaveh, contains elaborate instructions for the setting up of everything for worship in the Mishkan (Tabernacle).
The parsha opens with directions for the setting up of a Ner Tamid. a Perpetual Light, in the Mishkan. To the present day, it is a light that burns in synagogues at all times. Of course, that includes Ohev Shalom. That "eternal light" placed in front of the Holy Ark, is symbolic of the eternal quality of the Torah and of the Jewish people.
The parsha proceeds to describe the garments worn by the High Priest and the other priests, and goes on to set forth the procedure for the consecration of the priests for their holy work. The High Priest wears the ephod. the apron, and the Choshen, the breast plate which contains four columns (turim) with 12 stones representing the 12 tribes. In addition, the Urim VeTumim are part of the Choshen, placed on the heart of the High Priest and by means of which he consults with God in decision-making.
Although the instructions are no longer applicable today, the terminology has been adopted to name various works of Jewish law. The great medieval code of Jewish law, written by Rabbi Joseph Karo is named the Shulchan Aruch.which means "the prepared table.". That term comes from the Torah text, as interpreted by the rabbis. God says to Moshe that he should present the body of law to the Jewish people, "like a prepared table," that is, so that it can be easily understood. The Shulchan Aruch is divided into four sections, called the Four Turim, parallel to the four columns in the choshen. The first is Choshen Mishpat, table of justice, which contains the civil laws. The second is Orach Chaim, Path of Life, and contains the laws of the Festivals. Yoreh Deah, "teaching knowledge," contains the ritual laws, and Even Ha'Ezer contains laws pertaining to women.
The image of the Urim Vetumim has been adopted by Yale University as its seal, where it is translated as Lux et Veritas, light and truth. The Jerusalem Talmud asks why the Urim VeTumim were part of the High Priest's breast plate. The answer given is that Urim means "give illumination"; in other words, the words that come from God through the breastplate will light the way for the Jewish people. The word "tamim" appears in the story of Noach, the Torah describing Noach as "ish tzadik tamim haya be'dorosov," translated in the Jewish Publication Society Bible as "a righteous man...blameless in his age." So, the word "tumim" would mean "righteousness".
HAFTORAH This Shabbos is Shabbos Zachor, the second of the special Shabbosos before Pesach and the Shabbos before Purim. On Shabbos Zachor, a section is added to the Torah reading from the Book of Dvorim (25:17-25:19) in which God tells the Jewish people not to forget the sneak attack that the nation of Amalek made on the Jews after the exodus, when the Jews were in the desert on the way to the Promised Land. The haftorah is from the Book of Shmuel I (Samuel I),15:2-34, and tells of King Saul's failure to follow God's direction to kill Agag, king of Amalek. The prophet tells Saul that he will be punished by losing his throne. Both the Torah reading and the haftorah relate to the story of Amalek; it is the Shabbos before Purim and the Book of Esther states that Haman was an Agagi, a descendent of Agag, king of the Amalekites. Of course, on Purim itself, both in the evening and the next day, we read the Book of Esther.
TFILOT From the Shmoneh Esrei prayer: "We will give thanks to you and declare your praise for our lives which are committed to your care, and for our souls which are entrusted to you, and for your miracles which are daily with us."
